About the role

Malvern College is a leading independent co-educational day and boarding school for 650 pupils aged 13 to 18, set in 250 acres of grounds on the slopes of the Malvern Hills. We are looking for a Security Officer to keep our pupils, staff, parents and visitors safe across the College and its prep school, The Downs Malvern.

You will report to the Head of Estates and Compliance, protecting the school premises, responding to emergencies and helping to maintain a secure, positive environment.

What you’ll be doing

  • Securing all buildings at the end of the day, setting alarms and checking doors, windows and lights, including at The Downs Malvern

  • Acting as the main contact for out-of-hours calls on the emergency on-call phone

  • Responding to fire alarm activations and working with school staff and emergency services

  • Patrolling the main campus and Court Road, and submitting a nightly report to senior staff

  • Challenging unauthorised people on site and building a good working relationship with the local Police Community Support Officer

  • Monitoring CCTV and handling footage requests following proper authorisation

  • Supporting the pastoral team with pupil activities out of hours, including escorting pupils back to boarding houses and patrols of Malvern town centre

  • Helping to set up school events and supporting the commercial team with third-party lettings

  • Reporting any safeguarding concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead or their Deputy

What you’ll bring

  • A full, clean driving licence

  • Demonstrable experience in a security-related role, preferably in an educational setting

  • Experience assessing security risk and advising on proportionate control measures

  • Familiarity with CCTV monitoring, access control and other security systems

  • The ability to handle emergencies calmly and de-escalate challenging situations with tact

  • Excellent communication skills and a high standard of customer service

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to use your initiative

  • The physical ability to patrol the premises and respond promptly to incidents

  • Flexibility around working hours, including covering the other Security Officer’s holiday absence

  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people

Desirable:

  • A security management qualification

  • Experience working in the education sector

What’s on offer

  • A 4 days on, 4 days off shift pattern

  • Training and development, including internal and external courses and access to the Malvern Pathways leadership and management programmes

  • The chance to join a staff team of around 600 colleagues on an inspiring campus

Additional information

The role involves minimal contact with children and you will not be responsible for them, but it is classed as regulated activity. Candidates must be prepared to undergo child protection screening and an Enhanced DBS check. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide proof of identity, right to work in the UK and qualifications, and references will be requested before interview. An online search will also form part of the pre-employment checks.

Malvern College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all employees to share this commitment.
